Our project is an installation which focuses on the process of migration and integration, and more specificaly the language related part of it. It is based on the sentence : ‘‘ It can be hard, but it’s worth the try ‘’.

 

In a empty black box, you’re playing a person whom just migrated from a country to another one. 

Then you’re confronted to very abstract sounds at first, as well as questions with binary choices that are at first very confusing : brutal lines  that don’t mean anything and noises, symbolizing that you can’t understand the language yet and therefore your social / cultural experiences are reduced. 

As you interact and make choices, more and more real and clear words appear, as well as clearer sounds, meaning that as you learn the language, you will experience a huge social and cultural enrichment. There is also a ‘‘ hole ‘‘ forming on the black walls, through which you can see the outside, and it reacts to your choices too. 

 

In the end, whatever your choices are, you’re immerged in the experience, that is to say the sounds and the ‘‘ hole ‘‘ covering all the space on the walls so all you can see is now the outside, symbolizing your opening to a new culture through the learning of language.

The moral of the project is to make people realize that the language is the key.
